Bodhi, Cactus Culture and “Oz Juuls”

I recently represented EGA on a panel at the Nimbin Mardi Grass protestival. The Northern Rivers area is a lush environment providing home to many magical plant collections.

One of my favourite parts of this trip was touring the wonderous garden of Bodhi. I learned many amazing plant stories as we wandered between giant cactus plantings, picking and eating delicious fruit. Bodhi previously operated as Cactus Culture, but without his knowledge, someone else began operating a business under this name and appears to be reselling cuttings from the Damascus garden.

As we walked, I learned an iconic Australian San Pedro tale. Many years ago, Bodhi asked Keeper Trout if could identify one San Pedro. Keeper thought the San Pedro looked like “Tom Juul’s Giant.” After hearing this story, the plant became nicknamed “Oz Juuls” – but the correct label is “Bodhi 1.”
